Week 2 started off by Coach Martin finding a bird flying around in the recreation center. I knew when he was telling me about the bird that it was going to be a long week :o) My expectations to this week were to be working long 16 hour day again. I went into this feeling exhausted and tired for the days before. You’re probably wondering by I was so fatigued, it was because the last night of week one’s camp Thomas Buxton’s mom (who was the cook that week) made home-made pizza’s but what wasn’t the problem. The problem was that she didn’t line the cooking trays with anything and excess cheese, break and sauce that was burned on the tray. That night I didn’t leave the camp till 12:30am because I was scrubbing 15 trays before I left for the night. Wow, that’s all I can tell you.
Week 2 was a better week in terms of my interactions with the student-athletes and their coaches. They were starting to realize who was and that I ran a tight shift in the kitchen and the dining hall. By the middle of Week 2, Coach Martin gave me the name “The Nazi” because I made sure things were being done and cleaned a certain way. When breakfast was done I would run everyone out of the dining hall so that the team who was on duty for the day’s kitchen patrol could sweep, wipe, dry, and clean. I also made sure that the campers weren’t leaving their cups, and plate’s, etc lying around for me or my volunteers to pick up. I had to tell some teams on different occasions that I wasn’t their mother and I wasn’t going to pick up after them.
I will say that this particular mentorship was a true feeling to my personality. I do believe that I have an A-type personality and I extremely goal ordinated. Coach Martin didn’t have to worry about if the kitchen and dining hall is what it should because I make sure that everything that was supposed to be done got done.
Now, I did have an incident that happened in the middle of week two. Coach Martin gave me as one of my duties is to be the problem solver. During week 2 I started getting to the camp site no later than 7:45am every morning. This one particular morning I turned on the dishwasher like I’ve normally done every morning up until then. I didn’t hear any water coming from the machine so I figured that I didn’t do something right. I was thinking maybe I hit the wrong button or something. So I tried to turn on the dishwasher again but nothing. At this point I just moved on to the rest of my morning task. Then about 8am, one of the TU camps volunteers came in and I asked him to check the dishwasher for me. I just wanted to make sure that I wasn’t crazy. But he couldn’t get it to work either. So he goes to fill up the drinking water and nothing was coming out of the faucet. That’s when I realized that the kitchen didn’t have any water flowing through it. Breakfast still when off without a hitch but I have to call Coach Martin. I didn’t want to because it was early in the morning and I didn’t want to wake him. So I called and he was giving me instructions over the phone. But that didn’t work because I had no idea what he was talking about our where he wanted me to go. So I put one of the male coaches from the camp on the phone and we both tried to figure out where Coach Martin wanted up to go to turn the water back on. Well that didn’t work. Not only did the kitchen and dining hall not have water but the bathrooms right behind the kitchen didn’t have electricity. At this point all I could do was wait for Coach Martin to come out to the camp. When he arrives, I go with him to breaker house and try to get everything turned on and finally after hours of my water or electricity is certain areas we were able to get this up and running again. So I learned a great lesson that it’s okay to ask for help and there things will happen beyond my control. The only suggest I have to the camp is that they may need a new septic system. But I later found out that the owners of the camp are trying to raise over $500,000 so that a brand new system can be installed. I really have an appreciated or Coach Martin, because he never raised he voice or yelled he stared calm when trying to help me trouble shoot over the phone. He remained calm and I really appreciate that.
